Brawl at Bourbon July 22, 2011 Results

Cut_Brawl_7-22-11Once again it was a great night of fights at Bourbon Street as the heavyweight showdown between Team Mann's Eddie Castillo and Carlson Gracie's Jeff Burdorf took place. The heavy hands of Castillo were too much for Burdorf to over come. Both fighters came out swinging and it was Burdorf with an early take down but Castillo managed to get to his feet quickly. As the two fighters separated, it was apparent that Castillo had opened up a cut over the right eye of Burdorf. It didn't appear to be a factor for Burdorf as he landed a single leg take down but was unable to do much damage before Castillo was back to his feet. Castillo stunned Burdorf with a left and followed up with a couple rights. While Burdorf tried to remain his composure Castillo executed some dirty boxing dropping Burdorf, Castillo took full advantage landing strikes getting the TKO victory. After defending his Cutthroat Heavyweight title, Castillo announced to the fans that he will be turning Pro following in the footsteps of Gabe Salinas, who will be fighting at Strikeforce on July 30, 2011. The fans were on their feet during this match and it appears once again Cutthroat will be searching for their next heavyweight Champion.

The fight of the night belongs to the co-main event between Team One's Jeremiah Pollock and Victor "Smoke" Johnson of No Comment. Jeremiah Pollock suffered what appeared to be a broken foot early in the matchup, the two fighters spent the majority of the fight on their feet battling for 3 rounds. The left handed Johnson appeared to pose some problems for Pollock as he tried to get the timing of Johnson down. The first round was extremely close and could of went either way, the second round went to Johnson who landed some clean strikes and managed to control the round. In the third round Pollock landed a good combo stunning Johnson and Pollock quickly went for the takedown and maintained position for the duration of the round. The judges scored it for Pollock by 30-27, 28-29, 30-27 in a very close fight. Great effort displayed by both competitors.

A close second to the fight of the night goes to Miguel Garza (Team Immortal) and Mike Kubas (Gilbert Grappling), they delighted the fans with 3 rounds of constant pressure. Garza controlled the action wherever it went and looked to be very well rounded. Garza demonstrated crisp striking and great take down offense. Kubas was a gamer and took some heavy shots but kept coming forward, awesome fight!

The knockout of the night goes to Tom Shoaf (Carlson Gracie) with a devastating head kick over Marquez Jones.

Several fighters are worth mentioning for their performance, Ryan Kerwin, Paul Powers, Stefan Von Alock Justin Proof and Lucas Hyre all had dominant victories and made rather quick work of their opponents.

Unfortunately one scheduled fight didn't happen as Anthony Solis once again had pulled out of his fight with Billy Johnson. It doesn't appear that this fight will ever happen which was disappointing to the fans.
