Rumble on the River 3

DSC_4629It was a packed house at Festivities Unlimited in Ottawa, IL on Saturday night. There were eight amateur bouts scheduled with fighters from Team No Ego, Ottawa MMA, Team Devastation, E's Kickboxing and more! The main event pitted Brandon Bertuli facing Colby Reed. Bertuli seemed like he might be in trouble in the first round, when Reed pulled guard with a guillotine choke, but Bertuli was able to escape and do some damage from the top position with punches and several knees to the body. The next two rounds went in similar fashion with Bertuli controlling the top position and inflicting some damage on his opponent, but he was unable to finish Colby Reed. Bertuli was awarded the unanimous decision victory in a good competitive match up.

Unfortunately the original main event was cancelled between Jimmy Casillas and Ivory Blackwell. Casillas had a scheduling conflict and was unable to compete in what was a highly anticipated match up.

The fight of the night goes to Team No Ego's Brian Akins and Ottawa MMA's Jon Suplee. The momentum shifted back and forth several times in this exciting fight, as soon as it would appear that Suplee had the upper hand, Akins would threaten with a submission attempt to counter. Suplee would not be submitted in this contest, which featured both fighters reversing each other's position, that fired up the crowd. After three rounds, the fight was originally awarded to Suplee, however there was an error in the scoring and the official decision was a draw. Great heart and determination were exhibited by both participants in this contest. In one aspect, I never really like to see a draw but it also would be hard to pin a loss on either fighter.

The submission of the night goes to Chris Leipold who came out and overwhelmed Keith Hart with a barrage of strikes. Hart tried to maneuver to the other side of the cage, to create some space but Leipold would not be denied as he stalked his opponent and continued to deliver punch after punch. After Leipold delivered a kick to the body, Hart appeared off balance and fell to the canvas. As Hart tried to make it back to his feet, Leipold sunk in a tight guillotine and quickly pulled guard causing Hart to submit just 21 seconds into the fight.

In other bouts James Sale only needed 48 seconds to get Kevin Debolt to submit to a rear naked choke after a quick take down. Tom Farr, Simon Arzola, and Mario Martinez were all first round winners at the Rumble.

Bobby Kpa dropped Ed Whitney in the second round of their bout, Kpa moved in and followed his opponent to the mat. Kpa dropped repeated punches on Whitney, until referee Josh Bulak put a stop to the contest.

The Rumble on the River 3 was a success, having a packed house and some exciting MMA action!
