Cutthroat Babes and Brawls Results 5-12-12

Cutthroat MMA returned to the Atlantis Gentlemen's Club on Saturday. Fighters from across the country were here to test out the local talent. The main event pitted the highly anticipated MMA debut of Mike Reid (Carlson Gracie), who would be taking on Mike "The Pitbull" Hernandez (Team Quest) from California. Hernandez (3-1-1) quickly looked for the takedown against Reid, taking him down in the first 10 seconds of the fight. Reid was able to stand up quickly and get a takedown of his own. Reid was able to defend submission attempts, by slamming his opponent several times, and he inflicted some ground and pound on Hernandez. As the round progressed, Reid was able to stuff the final takedown from Hernandez and used his power to push his opponent to his back. Reid looked briefly as he would look for a guillotine choke but instead he postured over his opponent delivering bombs. As Hernandez looked to cover up and move away from the punches, Reid continued to move as well, staying above the head and avoiding the legs while delivering some serious damage. Referee Dave Lamoso stopped the bout with just seconds remaining in the first round. An impressive win for Reid in his debut, in the post fight interview, Reid stated that he would compete several more times in MMA, but would eventually look to turn Pro in Boxing.

In a controversial bout, Jorge Gonzalez (Team Colon) won an unanimous decision over Team Quest's Ruben Covarrubias. I witnessed something that struck me as odd in the second round. While Ruben Covarrubias was on top of Gonzalez in side control, he appeared to be working and keeping busy, however the fighters were stood up and restarted. It was surprising with Covarrubias being in side control and being active. This was pivotal, as who knows what Covarrubias would of been able to do with the position. Also, if Gonzalez wasn't able to make it back to his feet for the duration of the round, who knows what the impact may have been on the judges. It was an extremely close round. Covarrubias was visibly upset with the decision as he left cage side. This was a great matchup and both fighters gave it their all! Aweosme fight!

The knock out of the night goes to Top Notch fighter, Tu Warren, who was facing Jesse Miller in Muay Thai action. The fight appeared to be over after Warren landed a knee, Warren wasn't able to make it back to his feet with the allotted 10 seconds. After referee Dave Lamoso consulted with officials, it was deemed that the knee was in inadvertent low blow and the fight would resume. Shortly after restarting, Warren landed his left shin to the face of Miller, sending him to the canvas. The dazed Miller was unable to make it back to his feet giving Tu Warren the knock out of the night!
